What exactly is a chair's purpose? At first glance, it seems like a simple question. Chairs are designed to be sat in, and nothing more, and nothing less. Take a moment to look around you, however. At any given time, how many chairs in a room are actually occupied? As far as I can tell, not many. The chair dominates both our lives (literally) and our language (non-literally, such as "take a seat", or "chairperson"). Being practical beings, we must therefore consider that they serve some purpose for us. What exactly is it?

  • How does a chair work?
  • What is the process of making it?
  • What is its value (is it utilitarian or aesthetic?)
  • What are the metaphorical implications of a chair?

Benefits of a Good Chair

It doesn't matter if you're at work or at home, you usually sit for at least eight hours a day and soon you begin to feel discomfort in your legs or back. The chair is a major piece of furniture you use every day, so it's important to choose one that's right for you. Here are some reasons to choose a good chair:

  • A high-end office chair can solve problems of back, leg, and rear pain, which is one of the most important benefits of owning a good office chair. “Good office chairs provide proper lumbar and pelvic support, which reduces the stress on your back muscles.” The screams your body is letting you know should never be ignored. It is easy to resolve your health issues if you buy a quality office chair.
  • There's a saying that goes "you get more for what you pay", but it's not always true when it comes to chairs. When you buy an expensive chair, chances are that it will last you a long time. Well-rounded chairs can last for ten years or more and still provide the proper lumber for your back, legs, and rear. If a chair seems on the verge of collapsing, then it isn't the right seat for you. The cost of owning a long-lasting chair is actually less expensive than buying a cheaper one, because cheaper chairs may only last a few years. Consider how much wear and tear you put on your chair, and buy a durable one that will last for years.
  • The end of the day, a chair is a chair, but did you know that it can actually help you become more productive at work? According to the 3 Benefits Of, “workplaces equipped with office task chairs for everyone experience an average 17% increase in productivity.” Being comfortable will reduce distraction from pain. Focusing on your task is the key. After all, a chair is a chair at the end of the day. You will be able to reflect your work if you are able to buy the right one for you.
